The islands of Venice are a group of islands in northern Italy, belonging to the Venetian Lagoon. Among the most famous Venetian islands, we find Burano, Murano, and Torcello. These are fascinating islands that are a must-visit. In addition to these, there are also the islands of San Michele and Sant’Erasmo, which are less known but equally wonderful.

Summary

The 5 Venetian islands

  1. Murano, the Island of Glass
  2. Burano, the Island of Lace
  3. Torcello, the Countryside Island
  4. The Island of Sant’Erasmo, the Vegetable Garden of Venice
  5. The Island of San Michele, the Cemetery of Writers and Artists

1. Murano, the Island of Glass

The first island we recommend visiting is the famous Murano, the island dedicated to the art of glassmaking. Murano Island is located very close to the historic center of Venice and can be reached by vaporetto or through beautiful organized tours.

Walking through the streets and alleys of Murano, you can visit numerous glass shops and discover the many small workshops of artisans. Entering one of these workshops and witnessing the art of glassmaking live is a unique and priceless experience. You can observe the master glassblowers melting the glass in a furnace called a “crucible” and shaping the glass bubble with the help of a blowing pipe.

2. Burano, the Island of Lace

Burano, on the other hand, is the queen island of lace-making. As soon as you arrive in Burano, it is impossible not to stop and admire the colorful houses that stand out with vibrant and brilliant colors. Legend has it that fishermen used to paint their houses to differentiate them from each other, making it easier to recognize their own homes from afar when returning from the sea.

Burano is not only known for its lace but also for its delicious cookies called Bussolà or Bussolai. Remember to taste them during your visit!

3. Torcello Island, a peaceful island immersed in nature

Not far from Burano is the quiet island of Torcello, surrounded by nature and silence, with only about fifteen inhabitants. Among the things to see, the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta and the Throne of Attila are definitely worth a visit.
